Distributed Vibration Sensing

Apexense offers solutions based on an innovative Distributed Vibration Sensing technology introduced by Fibersonics Inc. in 2013. The core technology acts as a continuous microphone designed to monitor over quasi-DC to 500 kHz bandwidth. The Distributed Vibration Sensing technology can be employed for the real-time detection and location of acoustic and vibration events with 5-10 meters linear resolution. Based on a single mode optical fibre the LONG RANGER™ Model LR50 can monitor acoustic and vibration events over the 50 km cable length.

A possibility of acquiring high-frequency acoustic events as well as intrinsic immunity to electromagnetic noise opens a wide range of applications in the Oil and Gas industry. The Distributed Vibration Sensing system can be used for a third-party activities monitoring and pipeline leak detection as well as for an acoustic and seismic profiling in the wells and surface. The true uniqueness of Distributed Vibration Sensing technology lies in performance of a point acoustic sensor combined with benefits of Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing:

  • No power supply requirement for the sensors in the field.
  • Measurements are immune to electromagnetic or radio frequency interference (EMI/RFI).
  • Detects acoustic events over a very wide range of frequencies (from quasi-dc to 500 kHz).
  • Spatial resolution of measurement is 1 meter.
  • Maximum cable monitoring range is 50 km with 11dB maximum optical loss; daisy-chaining controllers provides unlimited measurement sensing distance.
